CCE 22.0.0 Release Notes
Purpose
CCE 22 provides the HPE Cray Fortran compiler (crayftn), a Fortran
compiler designed for high-performance computing (HPC) applications on
HPE systems with x86-64 and aarch64 CPUs and NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. It is
the first CCE release delivered as a standalone Fortran compiler
intended for use within the HPE SUPS (Supercomputing Programming
Software) container stack; the Cray C/C++ compiler is no longer
included.
Headline changes in CCE 22
CCE 22 is the first release aligned with HPE SUPS (Supercomputing Programming Software), the successor to the Cray Programming Environment (CPE). The theme of the release is decoupling the Cray Fortran compiler from the legacy CrayPE drivers and CPE module environment so it can be used standalone.
Standalone Cray Fortran compiler invoked through
crayftninstead offtn.Cray C/C++ compiler dropped — CCE 22 ships only the Fortran compiler.
See Breaking changes and migration for user impact, and the CCE 22.0.0 CHANGELOG for the complete itemized list.
Key Changes and Support
LLVM 22 base (upstream LLVM integrated through
llvmorg-22.1.8), used as the Cray Fortran target-specific backend for all CPU and GPU targets.ROCm 7.13 support for AMD GPU offloading.
NVIDIA SDK 26.3 support for NVIDIA GPU offloading.
AMD heterogeneous GPU DWARF debugging support for LLVM 22.
Bundled AMD ROCm device libraries updated (ROCm device-libs as of 2025-11-22).
Optional new
cray-fortranmodule (TCL and Lua/lmod), independent of the CPE module environment; replacesccemodule.
See the CCE 22.0.0 CHANGELOG for the complete itemized list of changes.
Breaking changes and migration
These changes require action by users or site admins. Full per-change detail is in the CHANGELOG.
No CrayPE driver or CPE module integration. CCE 22 no longer plugs into the CrayPE
ftn/cc/CCdrivers or the CPE module environment. Migration: invokecrayftndirectly, either with a full path to the binary or by setting thePATHenv var to find it automatically. Specify all CPU and GPU targeting flags explicitly, as well as any linker flags needed for non-CCE libraries. The
ccemodule is removed, replaced bycray-fortran. Migration: update scripts that used theccemodule to usecray-fortraninstead; or remove the module command entirely and specify the full path to thecrayftnbinary. Thecray-fortranmodulefile is installed under the compiler prefix and must be added to the module search path first:# For Environment modules module use /opt/cray/pe/cce/22.0.0/share/modulefiles # For lmod module use /opt/cray/pe/cce/22.0.0/share/lmod/modulefiles
The Cray C/C++ compiler is removed.
craycc/crayCCand the CCEclang/clang++are no longer shipped. Migration: build C/C++ sources with another compiler. See thecompiler_interop(7)man page for guidelines on cross-language interoperability with other C/C++ compilers.
Deprecations and removals
Removed the CCE C/C++ compiler from the CCE packages.
Removed the
ccemodule.Dropped the Cray PE compiler-driver pkgconfig files and the
set-default,moduleless, andcompiler-driverCCE packages.
Product and OS Dependencies
This CCE release supports the following:
Operating systems and architectures:
SLES15 SP7 x86_64
SLES15 SP7 aarch64
RHEL 8.10 x86_64
RHEL 9.6 x86_64
RHEL 9.6 aarch64
AMD ROCm: 7.13 (x86_64 only)
NVIDIA SDK: 26.3
GCC: 14
Notes and Limitations
Coarray Fortran support requires HPE Slingshot SHMEM, which is not available in the initial HPE SUPS 1.0.0 release. The optional Cray Fortran PGAS / coarray package (
cce-22.0.0-pgas-ofi) that depends on SHMEM should not be installed, and coarray Fortran features will not work. Becausecce-22.0.0-runtimerecommends this package, it is installed by default; see Installation for how to exclude it. Once HPE Slingshot SHMEM 12.2 is released and installed, remove that exclusion and installcce-22.0.0-pgas-ofito restore Cray Fortran coarray support.

The cce-22.0.0 package depends on one cce-22.0.0-gccNN-deps
meta-package; a dependency-resolving package manager installs one
automatically. To install a specific GCC version, install the
corresponding cce-22.0.0-gccNN-deps package explicitly.
To compile Fortran with crayftn, install the base cce-22.0.0
package. To only run binaries built by CCE, the base compiler
package is not needed — install cce-22.0.0-runtime, plus the matching
GPU package (cce-22.0.0-gpu-amd or cce-22.0.0-gpu-nvidia) if the
application uses GPU offload.
cce-22.0.0-runtime recommends the GPU and PGAS add-on packages
(gpu-amd, gpu-nvidia, pgas-ofi), so a dependency-resolving
package manager installs them by default. Exclude any you do not need
(for example, cce-22.0.0-pgas-ofi, which requires SHMEM that is not
yet available — see Notes and Limitations). On SLES, exclude packages
with a zypper package lock. On RHEL, specify
excludepkgs=<cce-package-name> in dnf.conf, since a bare dnf --exclude applies to a single command only. Before installing a
package you previously excluded, clear its exclusion first —
zypper removelock <cce-package-name> on SLES, or remove its entry
from excludepkgs in dnf.conf on RHEL (leaving unrelated exclusions
in place).
